After shelled hemp seeds have been opened they are best enjoyed in the next 3 to 4 months.

What's the difference between Organic and Conventional?

The main difference is the fertilizers used in the growing of the hemp seed.  Certified Organic Shelled Hemp Seeds are grown with Organic fertilizers.  Conventional Shelled Hemp Seeds are grown with traditional fertilizers.  Hemp uses much less fertilizers than traditional crops like wheat, rye, corn, and other grains.

What exactly are Shelled Hemp Seeds?

Shelled Hemp Seeds are the dehulled inner seed from the hemp plant.  The Perfect Food Companies Shelled Hemp Seeds are guaranteed 0.0% THC.  This unprocessed complete food is one of the most nutritious on Earth.  It has a nutty flavour (no pun intended) and tastes great.

Our Shelled Hemp seeds are untouched by agro-chemicals. They are fantastic for sprinkling onto salads, adding to smoothies, energy balls, and scooping up by the handful!

Shelled Hemp Seeds are are rich in protein, vitamins and minerals. Shelled Hemp seeds are the only edible seeds with gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).

Shelled Hemp Seeds are a highly nutritious source of protein, and are better tasting and more digestible than the soya bean.

How do I store my shelled hemp seeds?
  • Fridge - Shelled hemp Seeds should be stored in the Fridge after they have been opened.  We believe that this ensures maximum freshness and flavor.
  • Freezer - Shelled Hemp Seeds can also be stored in the Freezer with no nutritional loss.  Make sure that you use heavy duty packaging to protect against flavor loss.
  • Shelf - Shelled Hemp Seeds can be stored on a regular pantry shelf. Try and pick the coldest and darkest area if you have to store shelled hemp seeds this way.  After an extended period of time (+6months)  you will notice a drying out and flavor loss.

Can I pick up at any of your warehouse locations?

No

We have several warehouses throughout Canada and can not allow customers to pick up due to Insurance and Security reasons.

We at the Perfect Food Company Inc are extremely aware of our environmental footprint.  That's why we work within postal and courier systems that operate everyday.  The idea is that we must leverage the energy that is already being used instead of spending new energy to achieve the same result.  Thank you for your understanding.

What is Hemp?

The Latin name for hemp is cannabis sativa. It grows in moderate climates. Both the fibre and the seed have been used by people around the world for thousands of years, as it is very easily grown, and has many benefits.

There are about 500 different varieties of cannabis sativa, and they can roughly be divided into 3 categories:

  • useful for fibre
  • useful for oil
  • useful for medicine and/or recreation (also known as marijuana)

Different parts of the plant are used depending on what you want to do with it. If you are growing a fibre variety, you will use the stalk. It has thousands of uses from car parts (in the form of non-wovens or compressed into polymers) to wedding dresses (in the form of a hemp-silk blend). If you are growing a food and/or oil variety, you will use the seed. If you are growing a medicinal variety, you will use the bud and perhaps the leaves.

What’s the Difference between hemp and marijuana? Many people confuse hemp with marijuana, but hemp is not psychoactive. The psychoactive element of marijuana, THC, exists in hemp, but in amounts so small as to be insignificant. Whereas beer contains about 10 times the alcohol of de-alcoholized beer, marijuana contains about 60 times more THC than hemp.

Where does The Perfect Food Company get its hemp from?

We contract directly with family farms on the Canadian prairie. We take pride in knowing everything about our hemp, from the ground up.

Why do you contract in the Canadian prairies?

Science tells us that the shorter, cooler growing conditions on the prairie are ideal for producing the best profile of Essential Fatty Acids. In addition, the low population levels make for less pollution and a purer product, while the prairie history as a grain producer means there is lots of expertise to help us make the very best quality products from every perspective.

How is Shelled Hemp Seed Protein different than other Proteins?

The hemp nut protein is also of exceptional high quality relative to amino acid (AA) composition and the protein structure, the latter affecting digestibility and utilization of protein by our body. Hemp protein contains all of the essential amino acids in nutritionally significant amounts at a ratio closer to “complete” sources of protein (like meat, milk, eggs) than all other oil seeds except soy beans. Hemp nut protein consists of two globular proteins, albumin (1/3) and edestine (2/3), with a structure very similar to proteins manufactured in our blood, and are thus readily digestible. Hemp nut protein appears to be free of anti nutrients, which are found in soy to interfere with protein uptake. Thus, eating hempseed or nuts delivers protein with an AA composition as we need it and in a structure readily utilized.

What are Essenial Fatty acids?

An Essential fatty acid is a molecule consisting of a chain of carbon atoms with an organic acid group at one end.

The number of carbon atoms can vary from 4 to 24, and each is surrounded by hydrogen atoms. Each carbon atom is normally joined to the next one by two electrons, in what is known as a single bond. If the carbon atoms are all linked by single bonds, the fatty acid is known as "saturated". Saturated fatty acids are very stable, meaning their structure is difficult to disrupt through light, heat or oxygen, so manufacturers like to use them for food because of their long shelf lives. But depending on their length, saturated fatty acids may not be easily digestible, and can lead to poor health.

Sometimes one of the hydrogen atoms is replaced by another bond, so that now some carbon atoms are joined by a double bond. Fatty acids containing double bonds are known as "unsaturated". If more than one double bond exists in a fatty acid molecule, it is known as "poly-unsaturated". These polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are often referred to as "good fats", because these double bonds contain some unique, health-giving properties. However, they are quite delicate and can be easily destroyed by light, heat and oxygen.

The naming system for fatty acids reflects all of these things: the number of carbon atoms in the chain, the number of double bonds it contains, and the position of the first one. Hence, 18:3n-6 means that a fatty acid contains 18 carbon atoms, with 3 double-bonds, with the first one after the 6th carbon atom.

Although plants, animals and humans can metabolize specific PUFAs from saturated fatty acids, there are two very important PUFAs that humans must get from plants. These are Linoleic Acid (18:2n-6) LA (part of the Omega 6 family of fatty acids) and Alpha-Linolenic Acid (18:3n-6) ALA (part of the Omega 3 family). Because these two fatty acids are indispensable to our health, and we cannot make them ourselves, they are known as Essential Fatty Acids, or EFAs.

Enzymes within our bodies lengthen the EFAs to insert more double bonds and create new, more highly unsaturated fatty acids. These attract oxygen and help transform light into electrical energy and then to nerve impulses.

This latter group of fatty acids includes gamma-linolenic acid or GLA, which our body derives from Linoleic Acid and from a very few plant sources. The body of literature on GLA is already significant: we know that GLA helps in cases of rheumatoid arthritis, skin disorders, hypertension, diabetes and cancer. The enzyme necessary to make GLA from Omega 6 is absent in about 30% of the population, therefore GLA supplementation is necessary. The most common sources of GLA in food are Evening Primrose oil and Borage oil.

Stearidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are fatty acids that we obtain from a few nutrient sources and which our bodies can metabolize from Alpha-linolenic Acid. Health professionals recognize the necessity of these fatty acids for lowering the risk of heart disease and anti-thrombotic properties.

Why do we need Essential Fatty Acids?

Essential Fatty Acids ensure healthy and fluid cell membranes. A fluid cell membrane is critical for the effective exchange of nutrients, oxygen and waste products. EFAs are also necessary for maintaining the water barrier of our skin. A vast body of literature exists on the benefits of EFAs to our health.

EFAs are involved with producing life energy in our body from food substances and moving that energy throughout our systems. They govern growth , vitality and mental state. They hook up oxygen, electron transport, and energy in the process of oxidation.

Why do we need Omega 3?

The health effects of the Omega 3 family of fatty acids (primarily alpha-linolenic, EPA and DHA) have been studied extensively, and are perhaps best described by the symptoms of Omega 3 deficiency. These include dry and/or scaly skin, weak immune system, poor motor co-ordination, high blood pressure and low metabolic rate.

Common foods do not contain much (if any) Omega 3. In recent years, health conscious people have started taking flax and fish oils for this important EFA. However, too much of a good thing is bad and that holds true for this as well.

Why do we need Omega 6?

The Omega 6 family of polyunsaturates comprises several different fatty acids, which we can get on their own from food sources, or which our bodies can metabolize from Omega 6. The only one that cannot be metabolized is Linoleic acid (LA).

Some of the Omega 6 fatty acids (notably linoleic and gamma-linolenic) have been the source of many studies. They have been used to treat and prevent many disease states such as eczema, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, circulatory problems, and PMS.

Like any other substance, an overabundance of Omega 6 can also be harmful, and many of the diseases we see in North America today come from the overload of Omega 6 in our diet, as it is found in many common foods.

What do you mean when you say that Shelled Hemp Seeds are a Complete and Balanced Food?

Hemp's nutritional advantage over other sources of fats and protein thus lies in its highly desirable balance of basic nutrients. Simply put, when eating hempseed, nut and/or oil, our body obtains much of what it needs without the caloric ballast of non-essential nutrients. Yet, unlike fish and flax oil supplements and protein powders, properly processed hempseed offers these benefits "in taste," i.e. with a nice flavor profile. Fresh cold pressed hempseed oil and hemp nuts, particularly when toasted, add a nice nutty flavor to many dishes and off the shelf food products. Thus, hemp nut and oil are attractive both nutritionally and culinarily, rendering them truly modern food sources.

What is the amount of DHA and EPA in shelled hemp seeds or hemp oil?

Hemp does not contain EPA and DHA

How essential fats are processed in the body
The essential fats start with the dietary omega 3 and 6 parents. They are then converted into long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. The omega 3 parent fatty acid is called alpha linolenic acid (LNA or ALA) and comes from seeds such as flax, hemp and pumpkin, from nuts such as walnuts, and to a lesser extent from soya and green vegetables.  Through a series of enzyme-controlled reactions the body converts this LNA into a number of vital fatty acids including EPA and DHA. Among their many roles EPA is needed for brain function, concentration, and vision, and is also converted into a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. DHA is needed for brain structure and so is especially important in pregnancy for the baby’s brain and nervous system development.  Optimum nutritional sources of EPA and DHA come from oily fish as the fish convert the essential fats from algae into these fats and then accumulate them up the food chain. Now we have the opportunity to cut out the middle man and just consume algae based EPA and DHA ourselves.
The omega 6 parent fat is called linoleic acid (LA) and is found in seeds such as hemp, flax, sunflower and sesame as well as in nuts. Sunflower oil is probably the most well used source.  This is converted by the body into GLA, also found in borage, evening primrose and blackcurrant seed oils, well known for its anti-inflammatory properties and use in female hormone balance.  LA is also converted into arachidonic acid (AA), which although is needed by the body, also acts as an inflammatory agent and in excess can contribute to inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and cardiovascular problems. AA is found in meat and dairy and is often consumed in excess.
Good omega 3 food sources Nuts, seeds and their oils are good sources of the omega 3 and 6 parent fats and hemp seed also contain some pre-converted GLA. They do not however contain the vital EPA and DHA. Fish with omega 3 fatty oil are able to make these fats from the algae they eat and so provide an excellent source to those who eat omega 3 fish oil. We can of course eat the algae ourselves and chlorella and spirulina provide valuable sources of these converted fats as well as a whole host of other nutrients. If you don’t eat algae then you need to rely on your body’s efficiency in converting the fats itself. There are many ways you can support this conversion.
Optimize your omega 3 essential fatty acid levels
·         Have a daily intake of nuts, seeds and their omega 3 6 9 oils.
·         Include an algae / alga (spirulina or chlorella) drink 4 times a week.
·         Include good sources of the nutrients which aid essential fat conversion – zinc, magnesium, calcium, biotin and vitamins B6, B3 and C.
·         Avoid things which inhibit conversion; alcohol, saturated and Trans fats (from animal foods and processed foods), smoking, caffeine, viral infections, stress and excess intake of vitamin A and copper.
·         Balance your intake of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. Due to the widespread use of sunflower oil in food manufacturing we tend to have a much greater intake of omega 6 to 3 fats in our diets. This imbalance can lead to the conversion enzymes getting used up for omega 6, restricting omega 3 conversion. The ideal balance is around 3 to 4 parts omega 6 to one of omega 3. Hemp has the ideal ratio of 3 to 1 naturally with the addition of GLA.
Do you need oily fish?
If you optimize your intake of essential fats, and their conversion, the majority of people can achieve good health without fish. Oily fish also has a number of drawbacks in addition to the ethical considerations. The seas are increasingly polluted and unacceptable levels of toxicity such as dioxins and PCP’s as well as mercury have often been found in fish destined for the food chain. Farmed fish is also not the answer as this unnatural method of rearing fish not only relies on a processed diet which may not convert to the same nutrients in the fish, but also requires the uses of antibiotics and other harmful agents to prevent the spread of disease. Algae sourced DHA supplementation is however recommended in pregnancy as studies have shown lower levels in babies born to vegan mothers. Finally if you have a health condition such as diabetes or atopic allergies you may be limited in your ability to convert your own fats so you'll need to consider an algae based DHA EPA supplement.

Do hemp oil and flax oil provide the same benefits?

No. While they both contain both Omega 6 and Omega 3, they do so in inverse proportions. In other words, the Omega 6: Omega 3 ratio in hemp is roughly 3:1, while in flax its 1:3. In addition, flax contains no GLA.

Additionally, the non-oil part of the hemp seed is very rich in protein, while the non-oil portion of the flax seed is rich in lignans, a valuable cancer-fighting nutrient.

What are the benefits of hemp vs. flax?

Shelled hemp seeds are more easily digested than ground flax seed, while whole flax seed passes through your body undigested. Hemp seed and hemp oil also contain higher-potency omega derivatives, GLA and SDA, which flax seed lacks.

Are the Perfect Food Companies Hemp Foods GMO free?

We strongly believe in GMO-free foods. We are very careful in product development to screen for ingredients from non-GMO crops. The Canadian Council of Grocery distributors has banned foods from the major supermarkets that are labeled GMO-free.
